As a...Thank you for sharing your insights on these. As a newbie to backcountry hiking [planning my first] you've given me a lot to think about. I will definitely be taking a device. Thanks for outlining all the options. It seems the InReach Mini is very popular.
Hope you're on the mend! -NanaGram Latter-day Sopranohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15306723492293573963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-74004890686100044282021-03-19T13:41:43.664-06:002021-03-19T13:41:43.664-06:00Thanks! As the technology gets better, I think many of us - who do value independence and solitude- are going to have to do some serious thinking about establishing backcountry communication boundaries - being in-reach, but not *too* in-reach.LarryBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07234828576266704188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-49637947073660036692021-03-19T09:25:10.146-06:002021-03-19T09:25:10.146-06:00Good thoughts as always.

I could not go far for a week at a time. Had to be tethered to my job 24/7. And that is no exagerration. I'm now back in IT for half the money I used to earn but not on-call. I can't stress enough how much that changes my view of the trade I fell into!

The second point is that, as with you, I've rethinked my used of communication devices. I de-facto carry one now as almost all my backpacking is with Joan who always has one. (older inReach) The price/weight has gone down a lot as well with more competition. I like the interactive ones vs. a PLB for various reaons and trade-offs. Once the data plans go down (maybe?) be even more of a no brainer to take one.
Paul Magshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00495091813259481711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7763075223255003562.post-29550743842208885982021-03-18T22:25:27.193-06:002021-03-18T22:25:27.193-06:00Sorry about your fall. I just bought a Garmin in-Reach last week - after years of swearing I would never carry a “leash”. As you said, you can pack it and forget it. Seems like an OK plan to me. Hope you recover quickly.
